The Wells and Area Trails Society (WATS) is seeking the services of an experienced Project manger for the supervision and construction of the “Learning Forest Trail” infrastructure project. Wells, BC is 80 km east of Quesnel on Highway 26.

This is a contract position reporting to WATS (or a sub-committee appointed by WATS). The successful proponent must have their own WorkSafe coverage.

The purchase of all materials and equipment will be the responsibility of WATS. WATS will also obtain all necessary approvals necessary for the project, although the Project Manager may need to provide information and advice to this process. 

Project Description

The project will construct a short, graveled section of trail beginning on Dawson Street in Wells, just north of the Wells-Barkerville school, extending down to the meadow level at which point trail-head signage will be installed. From this point, approx. 500 meters of boardwalk will be installed on a predetermined route north to the Willow River.  Detailed construction drawings of the project are available upon request from WATS at wellstrails@gmail.com .  It is recommended that all proponents review these drawings before submitting their application.

The project is expected to commence on or before August 31, 2020.

Approvals and Permits

All approvals and permits for the trail construction and crossing of the meadow are the responsibility of WATS.

Scope of Work and Duties of Project Manager

The project manager shall:

  • Provide supervision and management of the project
  • Ensure compliance to all WorkSafe regulations and ensure any sub-contractors are WorkSafe compliant and are in good standing by providing clearance letter to WATS.
  • Ensure compliance with Covid 19 protocols
  • Undertake and record morning toolbox meetings
  • organize a volunteer and/or paid labour force to ensure adequate training and supervision is provided and to ensure adherence to WorkSafeBC regulations and standards
  • Order materials and miscellaneous supplies required for completion of the project, with preapproval of WATS.
  • Accept and unload materials as they arrive to site, ensure order compleness and submit appropriate paperwork to WATS.
  • Provide WATS with weekly project updates, scheduling information, and copies of all purchase, delivery and/or packing receipts.

Tools and Equipment

The successful proponent will have his/her own pick-up truck which they may need to use during the project.  A mileage rate for use of their personal truck for the project should be supplied with the application.

The proponent will need to supply their own chainsaw, basic carpentry tools, and personal safety equipment. The cost for the use of personal equipment should be supplied in their application.

Experience and Qualifications

The successful proponent should have the following experience and qualifications:

  • Previous project management and supervisory experience within the construction trade
  • Extensive experience with log and timber construction
  • Previous trail building experience, especially boardwalks
  • Power Saw Operator or similar certification

  • Three (3) references related to work experience
  • Expected day rate for project management and details any additional charges such as mileage or tools.

Preference will be given to residents of the Wells-Barkerville-Bowron Lake area.
